Artist statement

My ultimate state of being is lying on a forest floor—fingers and toes digging into the earth, longing to be swallowed whole, yearning for a time when humanity was one with nature.

My connection to nature has always inspired my work. As a little girl I spent endless hours outdoors, believing I could talk to trees—and, if I’m honest, I sometimes still do, though I now understand it’s not the trees themselves speaking. I used to dance with the wind as if it were an entity. Even now, nature—especially trees, mountains, fields, streams, wind, and rain—is where I feel safest and most free. These elements, or their symbolic representations, are woven throughout my art. As an adult, I still escape to the mountains, sometimes barefoot, seeking that divine connection I knew as a child. And often, I find it—especially when the wind rushes through the leaves in whispered voices, reminding me that the trees are still speaking.

Lately, my artistic process has become a journey inward—a way of reaching my own internal landscape. Through meditative making, I surrender fully to my inner realm, engaging in a mindful, intuitive exploration. Charcoal, my primary medium, connects me to the ancient cave painters. There is a purity in charcoal that few other mediums possess—raw, primal, and deeply expressive.

My latest collection of work is titled "Mindscapes,". This series of charcoal artworks delves into the complex realm of mental health. Using abstract landscapes as symbolic representations, I explore the intricate tapestry of the human psyche. Within them, moments of joy, hope, and tranquillity intertwine with shadows of suffering, sadness, and despair.

This series invites viewers to witness the interaction between opposing emotions, acknowledging and accepting their coexistence. It's an homage to the resilience within us, highlighting how amidst darkness, glimmers of light persist.

Through these artworks I hope to prompt meaningful discussions, inspire a deeper understanding of the intricate dichotomies within our minds, and offer a source of inspiration and support for those navigating their own mental landscapes.

Moving forward, I seek to deepen this exploration, researching the effects of our interaction with nature on mental well-being. I want to expand beyond my own story—discovering causes, remedies, and shared experiences. I also aim to introduce more colour and paint into my work, further evolving my visual language.

Biography

Art has always been a way of life for Lily. She funded her first year of studies through her artwork before earning a bursary to complete a BA in Visual Studies at the University of Stellenbosch in 2012. During her studies, she developed a strong interest in psychology and anthropology, which continues to shape her artistic practice. After graduating, she spent a year traveling, volunteering at a children’s home, and working in career guidance for teenagers. Her anthropological outlook and need to help people heal has had a great influence on her art practice. To her art is a healing tool that transcends through different languages and cultures.

From 2016 to 2019, Lily further honed her skills at the Marie Stander School of Art. In 2018, she launched a business hosting creativity workshops and art events, which has since expanded to employ other artists. In 2023, she transitioned into a mentorship role, allowing more time to focus on her personal artistic journey. While evolving through diverse mediums such as oil paint, acrylic, ink, and charcoal, Lily is particularly drawn to the expressive qualities of charcoal. She values the sensitive medium picking up slight nuances and changes in her emotion. Much like artists from the Romantic period Lily’s art is also influenced by a belief in the importance of nature and the spiritual connection it brings.

Since 2016, Lily has exhibited her work in numerous galleries.
